Project Summary

A physician management team sought a deeper understanding of patient satisfaction data, not just in terms of interpretation but also in how it should be analyzed. They wanted to grasp the limitations of the collected data and refine their ability to ask more insightful questions when engaging with analysts. By improving their knowledge of data analysis methods, they aimed to enhance decision-making and ensure patient satisfaction metrics were used effectively to drive meaningful improvements in care quality. We stepped in by developing and administering a customized training program.

The Challenge

A group of physician managers sought to better interpret the patient satisfaction data presented by the analysis team each month. A disconnect existed between how data was delivered and how it was applied to hospital decision-making, creating challenges in using insights effectively.

To address this, the management team requested training on data analysis to improve their understanding of how patient satisfaction metrics are collected and assessed. The goal was to develop a training program that bridged the gap between conceptual knowledge and practical application, ensuring the content was both relevant and actionable.

The Approach

To create an effective and practical training program for the management team, we needed to understand what kind of data was collected, the amount of data collected, and the type of analysis done by the analysis team. Our objective was not to alter the analysis team's processes but rather to understand their approach to data analysis.

Understanding the terminology analysts used in briefings was also crucial to ensuring clear communication between the analysis and management teams.

Additionally, we assessed the management team's baseline knowledge of data types, sources, and analysis methods. With these insights, we developed and delivered a tailored training program that made data analysis principles relatable and accessible for their specific needs.

The Outcome

By designing and delivering the data analysis training program for the physician management team, we provided them with the essential skills to interpret data and make informed decisions.

By the program’s conclusion, the team felt more confident engaging with analysts, asking insightful questions, and requesting follow-up analyses on monthly patient satisfaction reports.

The success of the training led to its adoption as a recurring program, ensuring that management remained up to date on key data analysis principles for continuous improvement in decision-making.
